Massage School Attracts Retiree for New Career

Kay entered the Massage Therapy Certification Program at CHAI well into midlife. “It’s a challenge. I wasn’t able to go to school after high school. I got married and raised a family and put my husband through school. Recently I thought ‘Why not?’ I’m going for it!”

IMG_0593When asked what surprised her the most about her training to be a Licensed Massage Therapist, Kay replied “For the most part I’m loving learning about the body. Right now I’m studying for a test on the skeletal system course taught by Dr. Jill Darling. I never dreamed there would be so many names for the landmarks on a bone, every dent and every groove, but we need to learn about all the muscle attachments. People who haven’t looked into the field are surprised at all we have to learn to ‘give a backrub’. There’s a lot more to it.”

Kay is excited about getting more hands on time in class and eventually working in the student clinic. So, it’s worth all the studying to get to “the good stuff”. The other students in her small class make studying easier. “In class, we give each other feedback, talk about what we’re struggling with, and how to help each other. It’s a nice group.”

An avid walker, Kay received sports massage and reflexology prior to walking 60 miles over three days to raise money for breast cancer research. She also treated herself to a massage before her son’s wedding, and used to get Friday afternoon chair massages where she was employed. Familiar with a variety of massage venues, she said “I’m older and retired and only want to work part-time. I wouldn’t mind working at CHAI.”
