Encouraging news for the Massage Therapy Profession.

The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) compiled data from US governmental statistics, consumer surveys, student surveys, and clinical studies on the efficacy of massage therapy in order to present an overview of the “state of the industry”, which should be of interest to prospective students.

An encouraging projection is that employment for massage therapists is expected to increase by 20% between 2010 and 2020, faster than the average of all occupations. In 2005, massage therapy was a $6 to $11 billion a year industry. Following the country’s economic downturn, in 2013 it was estimated that the industry is earning between $8 and $10 billion, which includes between 300,000 and 350,000 massage therapists and massage school students across the U.S.

The “average” massage therapist is a 44 year old female entering her second career as a sole practitioner. She works an average of 15 hours a week directly doing massage and charges $65 an hour. When adding in all massage related work (overhead, billing, bookkeeping, housekeeping, marketing, etc.) her wages average out to $31 an hour including tips. Her average gross annual income is just under $22,000.

There are more than 360 accredited massage therapy programs in the country, offering an average of 642 hours of instruction and clinic hours, and certification is now required in 44 states.. In addition, massage therapists average 21 hours a year in Continuing Educational Units. Many therapists branch out into related modalities like reflexology, cranial sacral therapy, Reiki, or sports massage.
